Play the Integer Game at home!

Looking for a new family game night activity...Play the Integer Game at Home!!!

Integer Game Rules                         Math 7
How to Play
The Integer Game is designed for 2 to 4 players. Students play the game with a learning partner or with a cooperative learning group of students. Each player begins the game with a score of zero. The object of the game is to return to a score of zero by picking up and discarding integer cards. The number of cards dealt to each player can be adjusted based on students’ familiarity with an operation and to differentiate for varying student ability levels. Below are the basic rules:

1. A student serves as the dealer (as well as a player) and provides each player with four cards.

2. The dealer turns one more card face up on the playing surface, starting a discard pile. The remaining cards become a draw pile.

3. The player to the dealer’s left begins play. On his or her turn, a player may select the top card from either the draw pile or the discard pile. The player must keep this card and discard another card from their hand to the discard pile.

4. A player’s goal is to have their hand’s total card value stay as close to zero as possible. So for each turn, a player must determine how the card drawn affects their hand’s total card value, by counting up or down accordingly. Also, a player must decide which card to discard, so as to keep the total value of their hand as close to zero as possible

5. Play continues with the next player, in the same manner, until all players have picked up and discarded a card four times.

6. The player(s) with a score of zero wins the round.

Module 4 Topic B

In Topic B, students create algebraic representations and apply their understanding of percent from Topic A to interpret and solve multi-step word problems related to markups or markdowns, simple interest, sales tax, commissions, fees, and percent error (7.RP.A.3, 7.EE.B.3).  They apply their understanding of proportional relationships from Module 1, creating an equation, graph, or table to model a tax or commission rate that is represented as a percent (7.RP.A.1, 7.RP.A.2).  Students solve problems related to changing percents and use their understanding of percent and proportional relationships to solve the following:  A soccer league has 300 players, 60% of whom are boys.  If some of the boys switch to baseball, leaving only 52% of the soccer players as boys, how many players remain in the soccer league?  Students determine that, initially, 100% = 60% = 40% of the players are girls and 40% of 300 equals 120.  Then, after some boys switched to baseball, 100% - 52% of the soccer players are girls, so 0.48p = 120, or p = 120/0.48.  Therefore, there are now 250 players in the soccer league.
In Topic B, students also apply their understanding of absolute value from Module 2 (7.NS.A.1b) when solving percent error problems.  To determine the percent error for an estimated concert attendance of 5,000 people, when actually 6,372 people attended, students calculate the percent error as:
 (|5000 - 6372|)/|6372|, which is about 21.5%.

Problem Set #2

Math 7 Problem Set #2

Read the instructions carefully for tonight's HW.  On this assignment I am more concerned with writing things in standard form than "plugging in" the numbers. For example on the first problem I am looking for an answer of -x + 2  or -1x+2.

You are more than welcome to "plug in" 5 to the expressions and verify they are the same but you are not required to do so.
